Five AWS controls
worth reviewing first.
A concise starting point for AWS teams. This is not a substitute for comprehensive risk assessment or the AWS Well-Architected review process.
Identity and administrative access
Review privileged permissions, unused access keys, MFA posture and the use of short-lived access. Document account ownership and break-glass procedures.
Audit visibility
Confirm that logging is configured for relevant accounts and Regions, protected from casual modification, retained appropriately and actually reviewed.
Network and public exposure
Inventory publicly reachable assets, security-group ingress rules, exposed management endpoints and intentionally public storage resources.
Data protection
Review sensitive-data locations, storage access policies, encryption choices, and any operational dependency on customer-managed keys.
Detection and response
Determine which high-priority alerts exist, who owns them and how the team responds. A configured service does not guarantee someone will investigate every finding.
What to do with the results
Record the control checked, evidence, owner, business impact and next action. Escalate any potentially critical exposure through your established process. Avoid making production changes without approval.
